At a passing glance most doors look the same. Essentially homes have three or four different types of doors. Front door, back door and double doors which are usually patio doors, these slide and French doors that are hinged.

Not too long ago, all doors were wooden; we now have a choice of uPVC, aluminium and composite.

Painting may no longer be required and the factory ready colour range and finish offers something for everyone. White was once the standard colour for uPVC but now you can choose a wood grain or colour finish and also have different finishes inside and out. So, you may choose a nice cherry effect wood grain for the exterior but a colour to match your decor for the interior.

As much as you can spend so much time choosing the finish of your new door, the important part is the locks. Don't be fooled into thinking just because the door has a multi-point locking system, it is suitably secure. Even if the salesman quotes all sorts of B.S numbers (British Standard), ask to see written confirmation that the locking system is endorsed by the ABI (Association of British Insurers).

Do not be pressured into a decision before you check out the standard of lock, no matter what deadlines and discounts are forced upon you. Go to www.locksmiths.co.uk , the site is owned by The Master Locksmiths Association. You can verify the suitable of the lock immediately.

If the salesman claims it is a high security locking system, it will be accredited by Secured by Design (SBD), this is a police initiative backed by the Home Office and endorsed by all leading insurance companies. All SBD accredited locking systems are 'Police Preferred Specification'. Always look for the logo pictured to the left.
